The wood boiler landscape will be changing dramatically very soon as the number of wood boilers that can lawfully be sold in the U.S. will be sharply reduced to the few remaining units that are able to pass the approved tests for reduced particulate and gaseous emissions.
If you, or someone you know, has been considering the purchase of a wood gasification boiler we would like you to know that the standard Econoburn models EBW-100, EBW-150, and EBW-200 will only be available for purchase for a limited time.
The US EPA’s New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) were entered into the Federal Register on March 16th, 2015 after nearly a decade of development going back to the US EPA’s Phase I and Phase II Voluntary Programs adopted by several of the Northeastern States going back as far as 2008.
For Wood Boilers, or (Residential Wood Hydronic Heaters per EPA’s language), a 2-step approach was taken in the final ruling:
– Step 1: Units manufactured after May 15, 2015 must meet particulate emissions limits of 0.32 lbs/mmBtu heat output with a cap of 18 g/hr for each individual test run.
– Step 2: Units manufactured after May 15, 2020 must meet particulate emissions limits of 0.10 lbs/mmBtu or 0.15 lbs/mmBtu when tested with cordwood.
To summarize, only EPA ‘Step-1’ certified units will be allowed to be sold in the U.S. after December 31st, 2015. These standards apply to each wood boiler manufactured after May 15th, 2015.
What this means to you is that the Econoburn models EBW-100, EBW-150, and EBW-200 gasification boilers will no longer be manufactured after the May 15th cutoff date. Our production will then move to the new EPA Step-1 Certified EBW200-170. Because of its advanced technology, the EBW200-170 will be priced higher than our current standard models.
Because time is running out, the sales of our standard Econoburn models EBW-100, EBW-150, and EBW-200 are rising rapidly. Econoburn Boilers has raised production capacity in order to fulfill rising demand, but may be unable to meet this demand prior to the NSPS effective date. Now is the time to act if you are truly interested in getting a great boiler at a great price! While this new EPA rule holds uncertainty for most manufacturers, Econoburn is proud to introduce the new EBW200-170, which will provide a solid foundation for the future of Econoburn.
